Happy World Octopus Day!

Hey there, friend. Guess what? Wyldling Armor is out in E-book format. Praise God! The labor of love is (mostly) complete. In case you were wondering – yes, there are octopi in the book.

The paperback will be out soon. I had some issues with formatting that put me behind schedule. First it was the margins, and now KDP is having problems with the map I inserted. This book is significantly longer than the first two but I managed to get it down to 550 pages, even with the 16 point font. I included a list of characters and added entries to the glossary at the end. Hopefully the size isn’t a turn-off for anyone. I’m told it’s a quick, smooth read, so maybe it won’t be a problem.

What are you waiting for? Go check out Wyldling Armor! I’ll wait …

What are your thoughts on chapter numbers? The chapters in my books are named but do not have numbers. I don’t have a table of contents in the paperback. Do you think that’s weird? Of course, I included a TOC in the E-book so readers can jump to where they want in the story. Ah, the joys of linking! Isn’t technology grand?

For your reading pleasure, here are some more books for you to peruse.

Disclaimer: I have not had time to read all these books, so I cannot vouch for quality or content. In the case you are dissatisfied, please don’t send the Brute Squad after me.

Wyldling Armor (Book Three of the Wyldling Dream Series) by yours truly, A.R. Grimes

Yes, this is shameless self-promotion. If you’ve read and enjoyed the first two books, then you’ll like book three. There are dragons, octopi, flaming tigers, merfolk, and a very frustrated and confused villain. If you haven’t read the first two books, may I suggest checking them out? Wyldling Snare and Wyldling Trials are available in e-book and paperback formats on Amazon, and also in paperback wherever books are sold. You can even request that your local library carry them.

The zeal to serve once burned in his heart. Now that he’s failed in his duty, all his dreams have gone up in smoke. Will he rise from the ashes to rekindle the spark of meaning in his life … or will he destroy everything he touches?

When Toad opened his eyes, the world was in flames …

No sooner has Sir Thomas escaped the curse that turned him into a toad than he discovers that Annabelle, the water wyldling he is sworn to protect, and a gravely wounded Raeden have disappeared through an unanticipated opening of a waystone.
Not knowing where they went or if they are safe, Sir Thomas burns with the shame of his failure and with the growing – and uncontrolled – powers of his fire wyld. How can he take time to face his inner demons while Annabelle is missing and Enoch is in the hands of the enemy?
Annabelle and Raeden face their own hardships on the island of the gwerindawr. Raeden, an ancestral enemy of the gwerindawr, is their prisoner awaiting execution. Annabelle is bound by a prophecy demanding her service to her hosts. She wants nothing more than to return to her quest to save her heart-brother, Enoch, but the gwerindawr king has other plans.
Drawing on training, faith, and the love they bear for their friends, Sir Thomas and Annabelle navigate the dangers of Tehara and the dreamscape, trying to reunite and rescue Enoch before the entire world falls into war.
If you enjoy portal fantasy, sword & sorcery, and fantasy adventure, then you’ll love Wyldling Armor, the third installment of the Wyldling Dream series – a coming of age story with underlying themes of faith, friendship, and found family.

The Death of Clara Willenheim by Charlotte Lesemann

I’m a sucker for a clean, gothic tale like this one. It sounds great, and the cover is lovely, too. Adding it to my TBR list!

Release date: October 29, 2024.

“This sublimely nerve-racking tale takes hold and never lets go.” –Kirkus Reviews

Something always has to die for something greater to be born.

Surrounded by family secrets, suspicious deaths, and her own repressed memories, fifteen year-old Clara Willenheim lives as a prisoner in her ancestral estate in 1860s Bavaria. Her only chance of escape is to journey through the castle’s secret passages, unraveling her family’s dark history and its place at the center of a vast web of crime. Driven by the capricious and vengeful ghost of her long-dead aunt, Clara opens doors that threaten powerful enemies, a place where she’s forced to choose between righting past wrongs or losing her own life.

A historical Gothic mystery brimming with suspense and plot twists, The Death of Clara Willenheim is layered in rich, period detail. The novel explores the cost of selflessness and the struggle to choose between justice and vengeance. But at its heart, it’s a story about how, when one part of ourselves dies, something greater can rise in its place.

Moonstone Phoenix (Ember Savita Chronicles Book 2) by Huckleberry Rahr

Came out on September 27, 2024. More phoenix-shifter hijinks! Our flame-haired hero, Ember, learns more about their phoenix heritage while struggling to convince their classmates that the WISDOM movement is bad news. It’s a fun story and really an interesting take on magic and fantasy creatures. Plus, it has a beautiful cover, so how can you resist? The story picks up right where Veiled Phoenix left off, so I recommend reading book 1 first (that one also has a gorgeous cover).

A battle looms on the horizon. Family and secrets are revealed. A rock may be their only hope.
When Ember learns of a stone that will help them better blend in at school, a journey to the legendary Phoenix Forest is the only solution to their problem. Though the trip starts off exciting, Ember and their companions swiftly discover their path isn’t as easy as they thought it would be. Will the prize be worth the cost they may need to pay?
Those fighting to show witches are superior to non-magic users find it easy to manipulate the masses. Their message flows freely to the public. But do the ends justify the measures they take to control the population?
When any who resist the party line that non-magic users are a threat end up in the hospital, can Ember and the alliance convince more people that the danger is real?

What I’m Reading

This is a quick read and an intriguing, fast-paced tale that begins the adventures of Alerice, a young woman who serves the Raven Queen and dispenses justice with her magic dagger and crossbow. I read the entire novella within an hour and am looking forward to reading the next one.

Our heroine, Alerice Linden, dies at the beginning of her story… but don’t worry. She gets better.

Having poisoned the town official who assaulted her and murdered her cousin, Alerice thought she could out-ride the Shire Reef, but after being stabbed she wakes in the Evherealme. There, Alerice discovers she is a natural-born Realme Walker, and she accepts the offer to serve the Raven Queen.

Assisting Alerice with guidance (and sarcasm) is Oddwyn, the Evherealme’s gender-fluid Herald. On her quest, Alerice meets Kreston Dühalde, a former brigade captain who is happy to fight at her side.

And what task does the Raven Queen assign? Slay a two-faced beast that preys upon innocent souls. Only, tasks aren’t always straightforward, and ‘beasts’ aren’t always mythical.

The Beast of Basque is the first adventure in Tales of the Ravensdaughter– six short novellas that deliver true epic fantasy in a 1-2 hour read. If you’re a busy fan looking for an action-packed story of reclaiming your power despite your past, then The Beast of Basque is for you.
