Another Challenge?

I may have bitten off more than I can chew…

No, the challenge doesn’t involve eating. This is a metaphor.

…or perhaps not. We shall see. In any event, the challenge I refer to originates from a private Facebook page called “Indie Fantasy Addicts.” The challenge involves reading independently published books in the fantasy genre this summer. People could choose to join one of six teams, each assigned five or six sub-genre flavors of fantasy. I joined a group cleverly named Marvelous Magical Mavericks because it was the only one that included portal fantasy. Full disclosure: it was also one of two teams still accepting members; I came into the game after it had already begun.

Each team earns points based on the number of pages they read and by posting reviews of the books they selected on the Facebook page. The caveat being, the book must be independently published and of a certain fantasy persuasion (according to the team one joins). Conveniently, the leaders provided a catalogue of suggestions in a spreadsheet. So, what do you think I did? I immediately search the catalogue for all the fantasy books with “portal” in the description and then went looking for the ebooks. Yes; I’ve already downloaded the first twelve of the thirty-six I found on Amazon to my Kindle (nearly all of them were free).

I’ve begun with Unveiled, book one of the Raven Daughter series by A.D. Trosper. What is it about portal fantasy authors using their initials instead of their first name? I’ll let you know when I figure that out!

Once I finish, I’ll post a review of it here as well as in the Facebook group. I’m already over halfway through the book, so it shouldn’t be very long before you see my review.

Here is a list of the books I’ve acquired so far:

  • Unveiled by A.D. Trosper
  • Vessel of Starfire by Allison Carr Waechter
  • The Last Witch Queen by Allison Carr Waechter
  • Sorrowfish by Anne C. Miles
  • Hawkwitch by Ashley McCleo
  • Southbound by Bethany Adams
  • Twin Stars by Bridgette Dutta Portman
  • The Tenets in the Tattoos by Becky James
  • Orcus Fled by Cassie Greutman
  • A Voice That Thunders by Cully Mack
  • Seven Crowns by E.V. Everest
  • The Portals of Tartae: The Land with the Two Moons by Marcia Soligo

That’s all for now. Until later, my friends!
