What a silly question. What’s not to love about dragons? Okay, I’ll admit that, according to most lore, dragons are huge, prone to hoarding, look down on humans as lesser beings – and most would roast you to a crisp as soon as look at you … But aside from that, dragons are awesome.
I love many “fantasy” creatures, such as unicorns, griffins, and phoenixes, but dragons hold a special place in my heart.
It’s that love for dragons which led me to include my own version of them in the Wyldling Dream series. On Tehara – as on Earth – legends abound concerning winged reptilian creatures of great power that once roamed the land, but they aren’t called dragons. Most societies refer to them as “the Sages,” and they’re often revered as good guys. There are seven Sages, and each one specializes in a different Aspect of the Aethyr, the primary magic system of Tehara, and has their own unique personality, appearance, and interests. While the Sages often aren’t center-stage in the Wyldling Dream series, they do play pivotal roles in the plot because of their close connection with the wyldlings.
I’ll tell you more about the Sages and the magic systems of Tehara in a later post.
Are you tired of reading books where dragons are nothing more than ravening beasts attacking defenseless villages or greedy, evil monsters meant for supposedly heroic knights to slay? Or books where the dragons are reasoning beings, but – good and wholesome as the stories are – the dragons behave a little too much like humans for your liking? Or perhaps you just want to curl up with a nice, cozy fantasy about dragons that’s set in “the real world” and not have to worry about reading made-up words you can’t pronounce.
If that’s the case, then you might want to add this next book to your hoard …
A Book I’ve Read and Recommend
Wings and Wounds: The Dragon Doc Tales (book 1) by Dr. S.K. Burkman
You know how much I love dragons, and this book sounded like it was right up my alley. And you know what? It very much IS right up my alley. I won a paperback copy in a contest and finished it in a day. That was about a year ago. Yesterday, I reread the e-book on Kindle Unlimited and I think I enjoyed it even more the second time. Because the author – and the protagonist – is a veterinarian, the narrative contains a scientific approach to dragons that appeals to me. Dragons need doctors, too. And I’m happy knowing that there’s a Dragon Doc out there, taking care of our big, scaly friends.

I love dragons. I have the Chinese requisite 9 dragon statues in my bedroom for protection. In China I bought a very large hand-painted 9 dragon scroll.

That’s awesome! What color are the painted dragons? I have a print of a green Chinese dragon on my wall. I may include a picture of it in my next post.
